The district
Campo Marzio
The original name of this side of Rome, was Campus Tiberinus. Then, with the construction of an altar dedicated to the God of the war, it was called Campus Martis and it was used for military exercises and sporting events. In ancient times, it included many major buildings and the Pantheon is the only one which has come down intact to us. History tells that new houses and residential areas forced the military to move to another district. During the Middle Ages, the quarter was completely abandoned when, in the fourteenth century, the refugees from Illyria decided to create a hospital and the Church of Saint Jacob. The urban structure is one of straight roads and principally seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings.

The place
The Spanish steps are now a very famous area of Rome renewed as a meeting place for Romans and tourist alike. The very pleasant public gardens of Villa Borghese are just a few feet away.
