Borgo is for Burg (little town) made up of the buildings of Saxon School. Then, was called Città Leonina, when Leone IV built a wall around it. The Città Leonina has always been considered as separate from the City of Rome so that, in 1550, Giulio III conferred it a separate jurisdiction. The area is provided with almost grid-like roads and has had various changes in urban layout as a result of the various episodes of Vatican history. The demolition of the "Spina del Borgo" (or the "Backbone of the district"), a long narrow block between the two roads which run from Lungotevere to St. Peter's, abandoned the area to the dreadful layout of Via Conciliazione.

Presently this zone is an ideal place to sojourn if your aim is to live immerged in the beautiful  atmosphere  of the Rome's historic center.
